Kentucky

I did not find a Kentucky state statute that adopts the three-class e-bike system for electric bicycles. Kentucky’s statewide bicycle rules are still centered on KRS 189.287 and 601 KAR 14:020, which regulate bicycles generally and allow local law or ordinance to prohibit sidewalk riding.

Checked against official sources on October 4, 2026. Rules and links change; confirm with the office listed before you act.

Where e-bikes may ride
Kentucky’s statewide bicycle regulation says a bicycle may be operated on a sidewalk or crosswalk unless prohibited by law or ordinance, but I did not find a statewide electric-bicycle statute saying e-bikes are treated the same way. Separate state park and nature-preserve pages restrict motorized vehicles or bicycles on some trails.

What to do next

  1. Because I did not find a statewide e-bike classification law, check the city or park rule where you plan to ride before assuming an e-bike is treated like a bicycle.
  2. For park or trail riding, verify whether the property is a state park trail, a state nature preserve, or a city facility; their rules differ.
  3. If you will ride in Louisville or Lexington, review local sidewalk and shared-mobility rules first, because those cities publish detailed local restrictions.
